Discrimination between tumour epithelium and stroma via perception-based features

چکیده
In this work we propose the use of image features based on visual perception for discriminating epithelium and stroma in histological images. In particular, we assess the capability of the following five visual features to correctly discriminate epithelium from stroma in digitised tissue micro-arrays of colorectal cancer: coarseness, contrast, directionality, line-likeliness and roughness. The use of features directly related to human perception makes it possible to evaluate the tissue’s appearance on the basis of a set of meaningful parameters; moreover, the number of features used to discriminate epithelium from stroma is very small. In the experiments we used histologically-verified, well-defined images of epithelium and stroma to train three classifiers based on Support Vector Machines (SVM), Nearest Neighbour rule (1-NN) and Naı̈ve Bayes rule (NB.) We optimised SVM’s parameters on a validation set, and estimated the accuracy of the three classifiers on a independent test set. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed features can correctly discriminate epithelium from stroma with state-of-the-art accuracy.

متن کاملCellular Automaton Simulation of Tumour Growth – Equivocal Relationships between Simulation Parameters and Morphologic Pattern Features
OBJECTIVE To develop an interpretation procedure which estimates simulation parameters (tumour cell motility, tumour cell adhesion, autocrine and paracrine growth control, stroma destruction) of simulated patterns solely based on morphometric features of the morphologic pattern. METHODS A cellular automaton computer simulation program was developed which produces morphologic patterns by growt...
متن کاملThe Application of Tactile Experience in Urban Perception
Urban perception is the result of mutual transaction between human and environment and the process of perception is developed through the three continuous steps of “sensation”, “perception” and “cognition”. In the first step (sensorial perception), the environmental signals are received via sensorial sensors and each different sense based on its own essence, performance and ability has its own ...
متن کاملClassification of Endometrial Images for Aiding the Diagnosis of Hyperplasia Using Logarithmic Gabor Wavelet
Introduction: The process of discriminating among benign and malignant hyperplasia begun with subjective methods using light microscopy and is now being continued with computerized morphometrical analysis requiring some features. One of the main features called Volume Percentage of Stroma (VPS) is obtained by calculating the percentage of stroma texture. Currently, this feature is calculated ...
متن کاملIdentification of tumor epithelium and stroma in tissue microarrays using texture analysis
BACKGROUND The aim of the study was to assess whether texture analysis is feasible for automated identification of epithelium and stroma in digitized tumor tissue microarrays (TMAs). Texture analysis based on local binary patterns (LBP) has previously been used successfully in applications such as face recognition and industrial machine vision. TMAs with tissue samples from 643 patients with co...
